slam city jams is back with its second release, produced by young brussel based artist kassett. this multi-talented dude not only makes great music, but also does visual arts (look at that amazing fanzine coming with the record) and has his own label & artist collective called midlife. kassett aka gavin vanælst isn’t about genres, but about emotions when it comes to his music. however, asking him what he would call the sound he makes, his simple answer is: rave ambient. the all i feel 1 million ep‘ is a record full of diversity. it reaches from emotional and dreamy, arp-based ambient tracks with rave and trance references, to broken beats, weird synth solos, up to a rough but melodious techno tune. finally the cherry on top of this special ep, is a remix by lobster theremin regular imre kiss. he delivered a dark and dubby version of the a2, that sounds like it was recorded underwater.

there was a time when to die was something slightly different from what it is today. back in the last days of the middle age, some hidden monk was concerned about how to die properly, according to the catholic standarts of that era, so he wrote a book that was a cornerstone in that period. this has been the leitmotiv and inspiration in the concept that drives this album, the ars moriendi book from 1415, a book that gave some clues about how to die properly, avoiding lack of faith, despair, impatience, avarice or spiritual pride, all those actually track titles in this compendium.

deep purple’s 19th studio album sees the light of day. it is being released by the german based label earmusic. the band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005’s ‘rapture of the deep’ so this is a long time coming.
this will make album number four to feature steve morse on guitar and the third with keyboardist don airey. as previously reported, concrete information on the album title is, shall we say, up in the air. “there’s a big question mark over the name at the moment. and possibly an exclamation mark as well.” vocalist ian gillan told classic rock magazine.

after a strong run in the early 00 s, 3am recordings came back into action in 2016 with a various artists release that featured a range of artists closely tied to the label s foundations. now label boss al bradley is stretching his wings with -night owl-, a refined production that demonstrates his experience in the field of tech house. goshawk comes on board for a remix that takes the deep sweeping original and makes it into an effervescent summer time groover, while label regular michael scott nudges -night owl- into stripped down late night territory. the third remix from fourfourfour heads into oddball territory for those who like their house music off kilter and playful.

freda & jackson’s msh002 is the second offering from sydney’s moonshoe records and their first ep on the label as a duo. in 2016 the two beat-makers burst onto the scene and further-introduced the label with a pair of singles, persius & sumluv to a warm response at home and abroad. msh002, although predominantly house-cuts, sees the pair draw largely on their hip-hop influences with a heavy use of sample chops and and raw percussion. the 5-track maintains an emotional undertone of sadness from front-to-back while each tune holds up as a stand-alone journey.

long time minus artist jon gaiser is back with his fourth studio album on richie hawtin’s influential techno label, simply entitled ‘iii’. the first signals from the album are sent with march single ‘on the way.’ it is a funky track with wriggling synths executed in undeniable gaiser fashion. textured hi hats and loopy bass all work on sucking you into the colorful and trippy groove. add into the package a typical big remix from sci+tec boss and techno megastar dubfire and you have one of the most essential releases of 2017.

after more than 2 years of waiting berlin-based artist fabian dikof is back with a new release on best works records his ep the who his trade-mark sound remains: catchy arpeggio-sounds with tech-house synth usage. with these elements he creates a very mature tapestry that gives the tune great dynamic play in its rhythmic morphosis. the track camouflage features berlin-based vocalist ann weller from the band ann & bones. last but not least remixer dubspeeka reworks the original giving it a more minimal techno-flavour and with its tool-character it hits the dance-floor full on. the who ep is yet another great stepping stone for fabian dikof. there is more to come from this gifted producer.

back to the vinyl rules, spectral rebel is proud to present its collaboration with the dutch duo abstract division, featuring two originals and two remixes by mike storm and re:axis. the good architecture of -convergent- opens the ep with a slow but strong climax, hypnotic rhythms and ambient sounds create an elegant atmosphere, surrounded by a resonant voice. -divergent- shows a deeper concept of techno: the emotional melody keeps the track into a new landscape, merging with a heavy basslines. mike storm is a familiar name to the label. his remix reshapes the original track -convergent- and takes us into an interstellar trip through the cosmos. the atmosphere is intense. re:axis version of -divergent- is a high-energy piece and it s definitely the powerful techno punch of this ep. classic drum sounds combine with vibrating kicks and some loopy cuts. spr007 is an ecstasy for ears and a proper bang for dancefloors.

repress alert: continuing to do great service to reissue culture, emotional rescue this time look to the nigh-on insurmountable back catalogue of late manchester-based producer muslimgauze, whose influence can be tangibly heard in the likes of shackleton. suns of arqa were equally enamoured with fusing the haunting qualities of middle eastern music with other styles, in their own case dub, and so their selection to remix a whole host of muslimgauze tracks made perfect sense. now the engrossing and otherworldly jaunt through distant lands enjoys a plush new vinyl release on which to truly enjoy the mixture of soothing and savage sounds.

the next release on zone is another mighty one, this time from electro and techno duo mikron with a great remix from the exaltics. mikron is a no nonsense duo who have already put out a full length this year in the form of warning score on central processing unit. as well as that cohesive opus, they have credits on this label dating back to 2012 and have the sort of high impact, toughened style that always makes a mark.

channeling a love affair with classic 90 s hip hop, an affinity for otherworldly themes and an ear for raw funk, barclay crenshaw uses his given birth name to bare his soul and deliver a slowed-down, emotive collectiob of collaborations and instrumentals. this self-titled debut album is a left-field deperature from his better known allias, claude von stroke, but the quality is undeniably the same. the themes of alien abductions and exploring of time and space are discovered and brough to life over ten tracks that sound like a mixture of gold rope chains and new age enlightenment. modern organic beats mixed with gorgeous melodic movements and underlying grittiness create an experience that is eclectic, expressive, and expansive. coded art furthers the sense of mystery and the unkown. harking back to the past while gazing into the future.

robo arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from nigeria’s ogun state. a founding member of pogo ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on sexy thing too. one listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it’s pretty clear that playing bass is where robo’s heart lay. especially when he gets to slap it.
